Choosing workwear layers starts with a small question: which piece will you actually put on, take off or carry during your day? A hoodie, fleece, jacket and gilet offer different clothing arrangements. Build around a gap in your current outfit before buying another layer.

The examples below are researched GS Workwear listings, not garments we have worn or tested. Our suggestions are practical comparisons you can make with your own clothes.

Map the changes in your day

Think through your journey, the clothing you wear at work, breaks and the return home. Note where you normally remove a layer and where it goes afterwards: a locker, hanger, bag or the back of a chair. Include any workplace rules about colours, hoods and the clothing you need to wear.

Now name the missing job. You might want a layer to keep over your work top, an opening you can undo without taking the garment off, or a sleeveless option to compare. Keeping that job specific helps you choose between the examples.

A hoodie: consider where the hood will sit

The black Henbury H841 hoodie has a hood and ribbed cuffs, as described on Henbury’s own product page. If you plan to put another garment over it, include the hood in your comparison. With both items on, sit normally and check where the hood rests behind your neck and against the outer collar.

Notice whether you want to keep arranging the hood or prefer wearing that combination with the hood outside. That is a personal outfit decision. Also think about taking the hoodie off while wearing your normal work clothing and where you will put it afterwards.

A fleece: plan the opening and the handover

The Regatta Recycle.Me fleece is an option for a full-zip layer. Regatta specifies a full-length zip and lower envelope pockets. Use the opening as a practical comparison: try it closed over your work top, then open it and decide how you would wear it during an ordinary break or change of setting.

Check which pockets you can reach in the complete outfit, particularly when another layer is on top. Decide where your everyday small items would go and whether you would need to move them when removing the fleece. Avoid planning to carry the same essentials in several different places.

A gilet: decide where sleeves are needed

The Henbury H875 padded gilet gives you a sleeveless arrangement to consider. Henbury describes a full-length front zip and internal pockets. Compare it over your chosen top, then try the outfit with any additional outer garment you plan to use.

Think through the whole day with your arms in the sleeves of the underlying top. Decide whether that is an arrangement you want to keep wearing after taking another layer off. Check the pocket layout in the combination you will use, rather than choosing on the product photograph alone.

Compare a jacket over your intended outfit

When you add a jacket, start the comparison with the top or midlayer you expect to wear underneath. Close the jacket, sit and reach forward comfortably, noting any repeated adjustments you want to discuss with the retailer. Check how the outfit feels with the layer you will actually wear during that part of the day.

Bring the actual underlayer into that decision. A jacket that works with one top may produce a different outfit with a hoodie underneath. Ask for the relevant garment dimensions when you need more information; an alpha size on its own does not describe the complete combination.

Buy for the missing job, then keep a useful record

Choose one combination to assess first. Follow its care instructions and note which items you wore together, their exact labels and where you made adjustments. Keep that note with the product details so a later purchase starts from something you have actually compared.

On the retailer’s page, select the colour and size before comparing the price; the amount can differ between labels. Check the final total including delivery and the VAT setting. Our winter-coat layering guide offers more detailed fit checks when your next purchase is a coat. The useful result here is a layer with a clear place in your day, including the moments when you take it off.
